History Channel to air a film about GlavUpDK

22.08.2022

Insightful documentary “Nepridumannye Istorii” (True Stories) filmed for GlavUpDK in 2021 will be aired on History Channel on the day the company was established, August 24, 9:20 p.m. (UTC +3).

August 24, 1921, Council of Labor and Defense issued an order for the establishment of the Central Bureau for the Service of Foreigners – Burobin (predecessor of GlavUpDK). The organization was providing diplomatic missions in Moscow with accommodation, furniture, equipment, and food. The Bureau also received at its disposal 38 mansions, most of them still housing embassies today. The more international relations the country established, the more mansions and services the company gained.

The filmmakers will tell the century-old history of GlavUpDK under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia rendered through the prism of the most interesting and previously unknown facts and fascinating stories. The film uses footage previously unknown to the public taken from the Foreign Policy Archives of the Russian Federation.

Viewers will learn about the prerequisites and reasons for the Burobin establishment, as well as about the evacuation of foreign diplomats to Kuybyshev (currently Samara) during the Great Patriotic War. The film is rich with unique facts about the cultural heritage sites managed by the company; it also introduces viewers to the interiors of the Zinaida Morozova mansion (Spiridonovka Street, 17, Moscow), where the Reception House of the Russian Foreign Ministry accommodates nowadays hosting high-profile international meetings.

Anna Esparsa, historian, culturologist, and lecturer at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University, advised the film crew on the history of the organization. Heads of diplomatic missions, well-known Russian historians and architecture researchers took part in the shooting. Among them, Robert Trent Jones Jr., legendary golf course architect, who shared his memories about working with GlavUpDK under the MFA of Russia on the construction of the Moscow Country Club golf course, the first 18-hole course in Russia and whole Eastern Europe.

GlavUpDK under the MFA of Russia wants to thank the Samara Region governor Dmitry Azarov and the staff of the Information Policy Department under the Samara Region Government represented by the head of the department Elena Letichevskaya, as well as the staff of the MFA regional mission in Samara represented by its head – Aleksey Chupakhin for their invaluable help during the filming in Samara.
